Stuart began studying classical percussion at the age of 8 and drum kit aged 10. He was playing in youth bands by age 9 and joined his first jazz band aged 12. His first musical experiences were through his father (John Brown, Astronomer Royal for Scotland), whose record collection included the likes of Charles Mingus, Miles Davis, Sun Ra, Frank Zappa, Jimi Hendrix, Stravinsky and Kraftwerk. These eclectic musical tastes have carried on in to Stuart’s own musical career.
After graduating from Glasgow University with a 1st Class Honours Degree in Electronics with Music (B.Eng), Stuart attended Berklee College of Music, Boston, Ma, USA, on full scholarship, where he studied privately with Kenwood Dennard (Sting, Miles Davis) and Ian Froman (Mike Stern). Since then he has also taken lessons with Ralph Peterson, Ari Hoenig. Clarence Penn, Ed Uribe, Dave Hassell, Trevor Tompkins, and others.
Over the last 11 years, Stuart has built up an extensive performance CV as a side man, working with artists across all genres of music and in all parts of the world. Highlights have included working with Niki Haris (Maddona's backing singer), David Byrne of Talking Heads (for the Young Adam film sound track), Tom Jones, Barbara Morrison, Dave Gordon (SunRa Arkestra) Evan Parker, Fred Frith, George Lewis, and the unique Orquestra Scotland Brazil project (a British council funded project featuring 16 Scottish and Brazilian musicians). In a support capacity, he has opened for: Al Green, Rod Stewart, Bryan Ferry, RSL, Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings, Bugz in the Attic, Russ Dewbury and many more.
